On Saturday, June 24, folks from the Sacramento Peace & Freedom Party tabled at the yearly Brown Berets National Gathering in the city’s Southside Park. Our friendly comrades from PSL had a booth next door.
The event made for a great chance to renew acquaintances with friends from many other progressive groups, among them La Raza, the Poor Peoples Campaign, Black Panther legacy, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe. The Brown Berets, Black Panthers, and SFMT were all at the Peace and Freedom Party founding convention in March 1968. Peace & Freedom Party and the Brown Berets have participated in several different activities over the years, including the Chicano Moratorium and innumerable marches through neighborhoods of poor and oppressed people who came out by the hundreds to join us.
We also talked with folks about PFP, handed out party literature, registered at least one PFPer, and generally enjoyed the day with music, Aztec dancers and wise words from many speakers.
Brown Berets/Peace & Freedom Party member Steven Payen was one of the key organizers of the event. Poor People's Campaign leader and Peace & Freedom Party members Kevin Carter and Maryland served hot dogs and watermelon at the Poor People's booth.
